Museum of the Rockies - Bozeman, Montana
Travel Journal, Page 2 of 2
By Thomas A Dillhoff, Pasco, Washington

The next area you enter is a large room with full scale reproductions of Maiasaurs in life situations, with an attached area containing a model of a Triceratops and her children. Near the Triceratops are impressive fossilized skulls of Tyrannosaurus rex and Gigantosaurus carolinii, (an Argentinean theropod dinosaur). From there, you move into a set of displays containing fossils of Pleistocene mammals from Montana.

The remainder of the museum focuses on native American cultures and the history of Montana. I thought the native American exhibits were particularly well done, because they didn't just show displays of artifacts. Instead, the exhibits contained models of people showing how the tools and weapons were used in everyday life. There is also a large temporary exhibit showing the "Weapons that won the West". It is an interesting walk through the evolution of weapons, from stone age spears through the Minuteman nuclear missile. The museum also has a planetarium, but I did not visit it.

My feeling was that the museum is off to a good start, but there is still a ways to go. I'll be interested to go back in five years or so to see what changes have been made.
