The lakebed deposits have produced fossil fish of several varieties, along with insects, leaves, turtles, crocodiles, birds, a snake, lizards, and even early primates. The monument visitor center has outstanding examples of many of these fossil types, plus it offers spectacular scenic views of Fossil Butte and the surrounding areas. If you are inclined to do some collecting of your own, ask at one of the motels in town. They can often connect you with a commercial quarry operator who will allow you to collect your own fossil specimens (this typically involves a fee, or dividing your finds with the quarry operator).
