The walking trails make the trip worthwhile. They range from short trails near the visitor center that take you past fossilized sequoia stumps:
 and a small fossil quarry:
 to longer trails that take you through the monument so that you can appreciate the natural beauty of the site. There is also a self-guided driving/hiking tour of the area that takes you through the region and explains the geology and formation of the lake deposit.
