Guidelines for the proposal description

The proposal description should be complete and concise, and should consist of the following major sections:

Proposal narrative - Provide a written description of the research project. This portion of the proposal may not exceed four pages in length (including figures). Items to be addressed in the narrative include:

  • Scientific significance - state the problem you intend to address with your research project and discuss its importance in terms of specific knowledge and broader importance in your field.
  • Research methodology - outline in detail how you plan to conduct your research. Describe any work that has previously been performed by other investigators, and how your work will build on their efforts.
  • Research results - Describe the final end product of the research effort, and how the information will be disseminated to the scientific community. Publication of research results in a scientific journal is highly recommended.
  • Duration of project - provide starting and ending dates for your research project, including project milestones. Provide a rough schedule of activities.

Bibliography - provide a list of bibliographic references for the project, not to exceed one page.

Education and experience - of principal investigator (one page):

Note: In cases where the university requires that the faculty advisor be listed as the principal investigator with the student as co-investigator, the education and experience information provided should be that of the student investigator.

  • Include academic degrees, along with name of institution(s) and dates awarded.
  • List any published works (within the last five years) by the principal investigator or other pertinent experience. Titles of articles and journal references must be included.
  • Provide contact information for the research advisor(s).
