Anemochory Inventory: Investigating fossil and modern winged fruits.

Elizabeth O'Leary

Winged fruits and seeds can be found as compressions/impressions in Tertiary lakeside deposits. These seeds and fruits are useful in identifying systematic affinities because they may have floral features (number of carpels, floral remnants etc) and may also have characteristic venation patterns or trichome characters. However, winged fruits are understudied and there is very little literature on modern winged dissemenules which makes it difficult to determine if a fossil winged dissemenule is similar to a modern one. I will be looking at winged fruits in paleobotanical collections and collecting them in the field. I will photograph them and make a database of the images so that they can be more easily compared with modern ones.
