Evolving Earth Foundation Announces First Major Grant

July 25, 2001 - The Evolving Earth Foundation approved its first major research grant. The grant was awarded to Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington to support excavation and associated scientific studies of a Pleistocene Jefferson Ground Sloth (Megalonyx jeffersoni) near Quincy, Washington.

Dr. Steve Hackenberger of Central Washington University will direct an interdisciplinary study of the sloth remains and the geology and paleoecology of the site. Several other scientists and students will assist him in the various aspects of the study. Dr. Greg McDonald of the National Park Service, an expert on Pleistocene fauna, will act as a consultant on the project.

The landowners, Jeanne Range and Dave Bishop, first discovered the sloth remains in 1998 during backhoe excavations on their property. Radiocarbon dating of the bones has placed the age of the sloth at approximately 13,000 years old. A significant portion of the skull has already been recovered as well as some of the cervical vertebrae. It is hoped that additional excavation will reveal more of the skeleton.
